According to a study by the NRDC entitled Threats on Tap: Widespread Violations Highlight Need for Investment in Water Infrastructure and Projections, the drinking water in Florida ranks among America’s worst. The study, which was published in May 2017, confirmed what many people have suspected: that people who live in Florida are exposed to unsafe drinking water.
The study drew upon the latest data that was available to determine that people who live in Florida are impacted by violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act. According to the NRDC’s health program director, Erik Olson, the problem is two-fold:
- The ancient water infrastructure is deteriorating, and
- There aren’t officials to enforce the nation’s water drinking laws.
Boil Water Notices
At the beginning of the year, a boil water notice was issued in Venice, Florida. The potable water main was being repaired and affected areas were required to boil water or use bottled water for consumption for three days.
According to the NRDC study, 7.5 million Floridians receive water from utilities that violate standards. Not only do citizens not receive yearly water quality reports, high levels of coliform from human waste, unsafe limits of lead and copper content in water as well as large issues related to violations of rules for cancer-causing disinfects.
