Water is fast becoming a scarce commodity, with areas already being introduced to severe restrictions and the future not looking too bright with regard to change. So if water sources are not going to increase, we have to look at ways to reduce our water consumption, to save our planet.
There are a number of really simple ways to save water, all of which you should put into practice with no delay.
- Fix leaks: seems pretty obvious, but dripping taps are the cause of gallons of water being wasted each day. Running toilets are another big culprit. Read your water meter when you know there is no water being used and see if it is still turning – underground leaks in pipes or irrigation could be costing you a great deal.
- Invest in water efficient washing machines and dishwashers, using them only when you have a full load. Low flow toilets use 1.6 gallons of water per flush, versus the older types of toilets which use 3.5 gallons.
- Install aerators in taps and shower heads: this can save up to 30% of water, with no discernible difference in the tap or shower performance.
- Don’t run the tap while you are brushing your teeth : next time you brush your teeth, put the plug in the sink and observe how much water you are wasting while you are scrubbing away at your teeth. Use water for rinsing only.
- Use a water softener: hard water can be very damaging to appliances, which shortens their life considerably. Soft water is easier to lather with, which will ultimately shorten your shower time and reduce the amount of money you spend on shampoos, soaps and detergents.
- Irrigate sensibly: use drip feed and efficient spray heads to avoid loss of water due to evaporation. Water your garden early in the morning and ensure your sprayers are not watering the paving or the road.
- Install a rain water and grey water tank: using free rain water and the grey water from your dishwasher or washing machine, even bath water, to irrigate your garden makes a lot of sense.
- Use well water to reduce costs and alleviate pressure on city water systems.
