According to research, gas water heaters operated on softened water were found to maintain their original factory efficiency rating over a 15-year lifetime, but when hard water was used, as much as a 48% loss of efficiency resulted. In electric heaters, the life of the heating element is shortened due to scale build up. This means replacing your expensive household investments sooner than you should have to.
