When it comes to the water that you drink, what is the healthiest option for your family? Distilled water? Mineral water? Purified water? What’s the difference between the three? We investigate below.
- Distilled Water
The process of distillation seeks to take advantage of the different boiling points of water and other harmful components that may be contained within the water. Water has a much lower boiling point than most other liquids, so through distillation, it turns into vapor, leaving the other harmful components behind. The water vapor is collected and soon returns to its liquid state, rendering it pure and safe to drink.
Distilled water is also a good choice to use for cleaning as it will be free of any solid impurities that may scratch surfaces.
Remember, however, that distillation cannot remove pesticides from water, and it may also get rid of the healthy minerals in the process.
- Mineral Water
Mineral water is water that has been collected from mineral springs and to which minerals, such as calcium, sodium, and magnesium have been added naturally by means of passing through various layers of the earth. You can also buy synthetic mineral water (i.e. bottled water). This is pure water that bottling companies have enriched themselves with these specific minerals to boost its quality.
- Purified Water
Purified water refers to any water that has gone through a purification process. Because of this, distilled water is often also called ‘purified water’. However, the difference between the two lies in the extent of purification that the water undergoes. Distillation requires a lot of energy, whereas other purification methods, such as osmosis, are much more eco-friendly and usually lead to even purer results. Therefore, purified water is cleaner than distilled water and is closer to being 100% free of harmful contaminants, including pesticides and most chemicals.
